"Waiting On" Wednesday - Sea

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This is event is featured on alot of the blogs I read, and I've been wanting to participate for awhile now.  Today, since I'm home relaxing, I've decided to take the plunge and add this to my list of "must-dos" on my blog every week.

Today's upcoming release, that I am anxiously awaiting, is SEA, by Heidi R. Kling.  Heidi is a tenner (author whose YA novel debuts in 2010).  You can find her on twitter as @seaheidi.

Haunted by recurring nightmares since her mother’s disappearance over the Indian ocean three years before, fifteen-year old California girl Sienna Jones reluctantly travels with her psychiatrist father’s volunteer team to six-months post-tsunami Indonesia where she meets the scarred and soulful orphaned boy, Deni, who is more like Sea than anyone she has ever met.

She knows they can’t be together, so why can’t she stay away from him? And what about her old best friend-turned-suddenly-hot Spider who may or may not be waiting for her back home? And why won’t her dad tell her the truth about her mother’s plane crash? The farther she gets from home, the closer she comes to finding answers.

And Sea’s real adventure begins.

SEA will be released June 10th, 2010, by Putnam (Penguin Young Readers).

Because of A Book with Kami Garcia

Today we welcome Kami Garcia, the other half of the writing duo that is bringing us Beautiful Creatures in December.  Thank you for stopping by today, Kami!

I grew up outside of Washington DC, but it always felt like I had one foot in the South. By the time I was thirteen, my family moved in with my grandmother and great-grandmother, and we had four generations of women living under the same roof - two born and bred in North Carolina. I grew up drinking sweet tea, eating vegetables cooked with a little bacon grease, and biscuits made from scratch. I mean, didn't everyone's great-grandma know how to skin a chicken, tat lace, and make dresses without a pattern?

I wasn’t exactly like either of them. I wore a lot of black, a lot of rings, and spent hours writing in my journals. By the time I graduated high school, I had probably filled a hundred of them and gotten my friends more than a few dates with my poems. That was the beginning of writing for me.

I have an MA in education, and taught in the DC area until I moved to Los Angeles ten years ago. In addition to writing YA fiction, I am a Reading Specialist and continue to teach and lead book groups for children and teens, part-time. I have learned more from my students than I ever learned in school. I still live in LA, with my husband, son, and daughter. Random Stuff: I’m very superstitious and have lots of charms. I love disaster movies, and I could easily live on pizza and Diet Coke.

My debut novel, Beautiful Creatures, written with my best friend and co-author, Margaret Stohl, will be in stores December 2009.

I was always a little different than other kids, but in third grade those differences felt more significant. My friends were getting taller, dressing cooler. I was size of a first grader, and still wearing those geeky Keds with the rubber on the toes. Most of my friends’ parents were married, and the only steps they had in their houses led to the bedrooms. Mine were divorced, and even though I couldn’t remember a time when they were married, I wished they were still together. But more than that, I wanted to fit in – to be like everyone else. It wasn’t like I was an outcast, but I still felt different when all I wanted was to feel was the same. Until I met Pippi.

I was digging around the shelves of my elementary school library when I found a battered copy of Pippi Longstocking. One look at the crooked house on the cover, and I knew I had the right book. I never imagined that the little redheaded girl inside would be just as perfectly crooked as Villa Vilekulla– as crooked as I felt most of the time.

Pippi didn’t live with her parents. She lived with a horse and monkey (which seemed more appealing to me). She slept backwards in her bed, ate weird things for breakfast, and looked sort of strange – skinny as a rail, running around in those untied boots. I didn’t have a monkey (although I begged my mom to let me get one), but I was the skinniest kid in my class and wore those geeky Keds. My father wasn’t the captain of a pirate ship, but he lived 3,000 miles away in California, which was basically the same thing as far as I was concerned.

Pippi changed everything for me. She was different, but she didn’t care. And she gave me the courage not to care either. So nonconformity became my thing, and even though my mom was embarrassed to walk around the mall with me, after I let my best friend cut my hair so I looked like one of the members of A Flock of Seagulls, I didn’t care. I did my own thing. Wrote poetry in my notebooks. Wore a lot of black. Hung out with whoever I wanted—cool or not. It was my version of Pippi’s striped socks.

So if you think about it, Pippi started it all. She was the first Caster Girl. Oh, and I never got a monkey, but I did get to hold one.

About Beautiful Creatures:
There were no surprises in Gatlin County.
We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere.

At least, that's what I thought.
Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong.
There was a curse.
There was a girl.
And in the end, there was a grave.

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Pre-order it at Amazon

About Pippi Longstocking:  She is very unconventional, assertive and extraordinarily strong, being able to lift her horse one-handed without difficulty. She frequently mocks and dupes adults she encounters, an attitude likely to appeal to young readers; however, Pippi usually reserves her worst behavior for the most pompous and condescending of adults.

Blog Tour Review: GirlForce

Title: GirlForce
Author:  Nikki Goldstein

About the Book:  Welcome to GirlForce, an exciting new lifestyle brand for tween and teen girls that is simply irresistible. At its core, Girl Force is based on an ancient science called Ayurveda that says our bodies are made of three elemental energies: Fire, Air, and Earth. And with just two quick quizzes about body and mind you can determine your Body Type. Air girls are outgoing and creative; Fire girls are born leaders and highly passionate; and Earth girls are easygoing and make loyal friends.
Guided by these principles, and using lush, high-end photography and gorgeously designed pages, GirlForce imparts the best food, exercise, makeup, yoga, stress relievers and more for your body type. But don't just read about your type...reading your friends' types can help you figure them out too!

About the Author:  Nikki Goldstein has been a beauty and health editor for nearly 20 years and has written for magazines such as Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and Vogue. Nikki has conducted one of the largest global surveys of teen and tween girls and the issues they face, and the results of which inform every aspect of GirlForce.
Nikki’s favorite things are yoga, chocolate and spending time with her family. She’s an Earth Body Type and is fond of extravagant lounging and watching old movies. Nikki lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband Rowan and daughter Liberty.

I had the chance to send Nikki some questions about the book.  Here's what she had to say...

Write For A Reader: Young girls today are inundated by images of "skinny girl" models in magazines and on tv.  This leads to self esteem/body image issues in many teen girls.  How do you, as a beauty editor/writer for such magazines try to combat this dilemma that sometimes leads to tragedy in our teens?

Nikki Goldstein: It's true that many teenage girls feel a huge pressure to conform to stereotypical images of beauty. It's also true that this causes a lot of pain and has been linked to everything from depression to eating disorders. As a journalist and beauty/health editor I have the power to change the way girls see themselves. GirlForce is all about teaching girls to celebrate themselves - just the way they are. By practicing daily affirmations such as, "I love and accept myself just the way I am", girls will find a path to self-acceptance. From that place they discover that the media can only exert a very superficial influence on them.

Write For A Reader: Can you talk about celebrating your unique beauty?

Nikki Goldstein:  I aim to get girls to accept themselves no matter what shape or size they are, what skin colour they have and what challenges they have in their lives. Learning to celebrate your unique beauty is a daily process - one that involves taking action in little ways every day. Every girl will find flaws with her face and body when she looks in the mirror. The challenge is to get beyond the mirror, and beyond comparing yourself to others. The only way to do this is to incorporate self-loving practices such as yoga, exercise and pampering into their daily lives. When girls learn to love themselves in an active and healthy way their self-esteem blossoms. In the GirlForce universe everything is beautiful - big butts, little butts, big boobs, small, boobs, straight noses, crooked noses....beauty is about loving yourself.

My Review:  This was a fun book to read!  By fun I mean, it wasn't just page after page of text.  There were great pictures, quizzes, fun captions, and lots of information.  This book is geared to tween and teen girls, and I think it should be read by them.

Goldstein gives girls insight into how to love themselves, be happy with their bodies, and learn how to celebrate the uniqueness of themselves.  Today, too many girls focus on what they're not or don't have.  Everyone is different, and they need to be able to recognize those differences and strengthen them.

I think this is a great book for girls!  It offers so many tips, tools and advice to help girls lead a healthy, I love myself life.  I recommend this one for middle school/high school libraries, classrooms, and households with tween/teen girls.  5/5 stars for GirlForce!!

By the way, I'm a Fire girl.  See what you are by taking the Body Type quiz and then check out the Awesome GirlForce Body Types.

Blog Tour Review: The Castaways

Title:  The Castaways
Author: Elin Hilderbrand
Review Copy Provided by: Little, Brown

About the Book:  Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy's closest friends for what will be revealed.

About the Author:  Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her five previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.

My Review:   What's better about a beach read than to be set on a beach, and the beaches of Nantucket, nonetheless?  This is a great summer read!  Hildebrand does a good job of telling the story of four couples who have done everything together, vacationed, celebrated, confided in and depended on.  What happens when one of those couples mysteriously disappears, leaving behind 2 small children?  How will the rest of their friends go on? What really happened to the MacAvoys?  Elin Hildebrand tries to answer all of those questions through this book.  The six friends left behind try to answer the latter question on their own.

I enjoyed the passion in this story, as well as the suspense that the disappearance and search for the answer to the disappearance brought about.  This read allowed me to get out of my reality and into another that I was unfamiliar with; life on the beaches of Nantucket.  What an escape for me!  Secrets are stirred up, old affairs revealed, and many other tidbits are brought out into the open.  This is romantic fiction at it's best!  4 out of 5 stars for The Castaways!

Please join us at Elin Hilderbrand's Nantucket where you can find drink recipes and more about The Castaways as well as Elin's other books.

Eyes Like Stars Release EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!

This week, Eyes Like Stars, the debut YA novel by Lisa Mantchev, is being released!  Lisa has been awaiting this day with bated breath, on pins and needles, and any other number of cliches that you can think of.  Many of you have read and reviewed her book, so you know how awesome it is.  Others of you have been waiting for this day, as you have pre-ordered your copy, or are ready to run to the bookstore to pick it up.  You need to get it by the way, read it, enjoy it, share it with others; it's that good!  Okay, enough gushing over Eyes Like Stars, for now.  Here's a little about the book:

Beatrice Shakespeare Smith is not an actress, yet she lives in a theater.
She's not an orphan, but she has no parents.
She knows every part, but she has no lines of her own.
Until now.

Vania at Reverie Book Reviews and I were thinking that we wanted to help Lisa celebrate this momentous week by sending her some congratulatory vlogs, cards, pictures, etc.  How can we do that?  Well, you make a vlog congratulating Lisa on her release, post it on your blog, and then come back here and leave the link to your post in the comments.  If you are not a vlogger, then make a card, a poster, write a note, etc., post a picture of it on your blog, and then come back here and leave the link in the comments.   At the end of the week, we are going to ask Lisa to choose the top 2 entries for a prize pack.  What, prizes?  Yes, prizes, and here they are:

First prize will receive:
  • An 8X10 print of your choice from the Eyes Like Stars photo shoot that Vania did
  • Waters and Wild
  • Coffeehouse Angel (ARC)
  • Dairy Queen
  • Such a Pretty Girl
  • Swoon (ARC)
  • The Giver
Second prize will receive:
  • Castration Celebration
  • The Forest of Hands and Teeth
  • Kisses and Lies
  • Poison Ink (ARC)
Extra Entry for Extra Prize:

I have created a Google Map for Lisa because Eyes Like Stars has been sent out early and we want to track where they are being spotted.  So, if you go out and find Eyes Like Stars in your mailbox or at the bookstore, snap a picture of it and send it to me, along with the city, state and zip code of where you are.  I will then post it on the map and one participant will be chosen at random to win an 8X10 print from Vania's photo shoot along with some Eyes Like Stars swag.

That's all there is to it!  The contest will run from today until Saturday, July 11th at midnight.  The winners will be chosen and their entries posted on our blogs.

Oh, and Lisa has no idea we are doing this, so until she sees this post, or your entry...shhhh!
