Cover Fragment: So Silver Bright

If you've followed me long enough, you will know that I'm a HUGE fan of Lisa Mantchev and have been since she debuted with Eyes Like Stars.  Well, here we are 2 novels later and Lisa is about to release the final chapter in Bertie's story, So Silver Bright.

Last week Lisa posted on her blog looking for bloggers that would help her reveal the cover for So Silver Bright.  I am so honored to have been chosen, along with some other awesome bloggers, to share fragments of the cover with you all week and then reveal the full cover on Friday.  So, without further adieu, here is a little piece of the cover.

Bertie thinks her quest is almost done. With the help of Ariel and the rest of her friends, she has managed to find her father and rescue the kidnapped pirate, Nate, from Sedna the sea goddess. Now all she has to do is reunite her father, The Scrimshander, with her mother, Ophelia, and she will finally have a true family of her own.  However, things are never easy for Beatrice Shakespeare Smith. Her father has vanished, Sedna is out for revenge, her own actions have trapped the Theatre Illuminata, the only home she’s ever known, into a strange kind of limbo, and the stress of her in-between state is tearing apart the fragile threads of her mother’s sanity. Bertie’s best hope for salvaging the situation may lie in the summons by Her Gracious Majesty, Queen of the Distant Castle and hope of winning the magical boon given to the most pleasing performance. Bertie is caught between her growing responsibilities to home and family and the dream of flying free, just as her heart is torn between her two loves, Ariel and Nate. With so many forces pulling on her, how will Bertie be able to choose which wish to make come true?

It's just full of "awesomesauce!"  Remember, this is only a fragment of the cover...wait until Friday to see it all revealed.  You will love it, I'm sure.  The covers for Lisa's books have gotten more beautiful with each one and this one did not disappoint me.

If you haven't read the beginning of the story, Eyes Like Stars, you can enter for a chance to win a copy by filling out this form.  One lucky reader will receive a copy from Feiwel and Friends.  Comments won't count for entries; you must fill out the form. Enter until Friday, 2/18, at midnight.  There are chances for extra entries, but really all you have to do is leave your name and contact information.

You can see the other "pieces of the puzzle" by visiting the other blogs:

It's a Cupcakeathon!!!

Today is the big day!  Perchance to Dream, the second book in Lisa Mantchev's Theatre Illuminata series, is released into the book world.  So, to celebrate, Lisa Mantchev is hosting a cupcakeathon!  What could be more fun?  If you've read Eyes Like Stars, you know that the fairies are very fond of sweets, cupcakes to be exact.  In Perchance to Dream, they tend toward pies, but I don't want to spoil it for you until you get your hands on this masterpiece.  You can read my review of this fabulous novel, that I posted last month.

What is this cupcakeathon all about?  Well, no one can explain it better than Lisa herself, which she does in this blog post.  She bakes cupcakes with her little fairy!

So, what was I going to do?  I wanted to give the fairies something they would enjoy, as well as make something new to me.  Well, I dug around in my recipes and decided on not cupcakes, but a whole cake, bundt cake to be exact.  Now, I know that Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, and Peaseblossom love anything sweet, and celebrations.  What's needed more than sweets at a celebration?  Beverages.  So, I've combined the two for them in my Margarita Cake.  Now, don't worry, no inebriation will be happening to these dear sweet fairies, so no alcohol was involved in the baking of this cake.  But, the lemon, lime, orange combination give your mouth the illusion of the margarita.

Do you think that the fairies will enjoy it?  I know that the fairies, umm teachers, that I work with, will definitely enjoy it at our faculty end of year party tomorrow afternoon. I'm anxious to see what they think, but I hope it isn't eaten before then.  One big fairy in my house could get into it tonight, should he long for a midnight snack.  That is if the sneaky little fairies don't get it first.

I'll share the recipe with you, in case you want to try it for yourself!

Cake:

1 Lemon Supreme Cake Mix
1 cup Cooking Oil
5 Eggs
3/4 cup Orange Juice

Icing:

5 tablespoons Lime Juice
1 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar

Mix all ingredients for cake.  Beat for 2 minutes until well blended.  Pour into greased and floured bundt pan.  Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Right after taking cake out of oven, poke holes in bottom of cake with a skewer.  Mix lime juice and powdered sugar, pouring half on the bottom of the cake.  Let cake cool, then turn out and after completely cool, ice with remaining icing.

"Waiting On" Wednesday - Perchance to Dream

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Perchance to Dream
by Lisa Mantchev
Publication Date: May 25th 2010 by Feiwel & Friends

The stuff that dreams are made on.

Act Two, Scene One

Growing up in the enchanted Thèâtre Illuminata, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith learned everything about every play ever written. She knew the Players and their parts, but she didn’t know that she, too, had magic. Now, she is the Mistress of Revels, the Teller of Tales, and determined to follow her stars. She is ready for the outside world.

Enter BERTIE AND COMPANY

But the outside world soon proves more topsy-turvy than any stage production. Bertie can make things happen by writing them, but outside the protective walls of the Thèâtre, nothing goes as planned. And her magic cannot help her make a decision between—

Nate: Her suave and swashbuckling pirate, now in mortal peril.

Ariel: A brooding, yet seductive, air spirit whose true motives remain unclear.

When Nate is kidnapped and taken prisoner by the Sea Goddess, only Bertie can free him. She and her fairy sidekicks embark on a journey aboard the Thèâtre’s caravan, using Bertie’s word magic to guide them. Along the way, they collect a sneak-thief, who has in his possession something most valuable, and meet The Mysterious Stranger, Bertie’s father—and the creator of the scrimshaw medallion. Bertie’s dreams are haunted by Nate, whose love for Bertie is keeping him alive, but in the daytime, it’s Ariel who is tantalizingly close, and the one she is falling for. Who does Bertie love the most? And will her magic be powerful enough to save her once she enters the Sea Goddess’s lair?

Once again, LISA MANTCHEV has spun a tale like no other—full of romance, magic, adventure, and fairies, too—that readers won’t want to put down, even after the curtain has closed.

What can I say?  No, it's not a debut book, like I usually post for WoW, but I couldn't resist.  I love Lisa and fell in love with Bertie in Act One: Eyes Like Stars.  I have been waiting on this one and was ecstatic when an ARC was delivered a couple of weeks ago.  It is calling to me, and this weekend, I will pick it up and get lost in the theatre and Bertie's world once again.  If this act is anything like the first one, it will deserve a "bravo; encore!"

Belated Contest Announcements

No one ever said starting a new job was easy, nor did they say life would continue on as you knew it when you started a new job. Well, both are true for me. I absolutely love my new job and I'm learning so much every day, but I feel like I'm letting you down.  I haven't been consistent about posting, reading blogs, and getting contest announcements out.  For my absence and inconsistency, I sincerely apologize.  I love my blog and miss posting reviews and interacting with you.

I have 2 contests that I need to post winners for tonight.  I will be emailing the winners and getting their prizes sent out from their respective places as soon as I get mailing information.  So, without further adieu...

Eyes Like Stars Release EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!

This week, Eyes Like Stars, the debut YA novel by Lisa Mantchev, is being released!  Lisa has been awaiting this day with bated breath, on pins and needles, and any other number of cliches that you can think of.  Many of you have read and reviewed her book, so you know how awesome it is.  Others of you have been waiting for this day, as you have pre-ordered your copy, or are ready to run to the bookstore to pick it up.  You need to get it by the way, read it, enjoy it, share it with others; it's that good!  Okay, enough gushing over Eyes Like Stars, for now.  Here's a little about the book:

Beatrice Shakespeare Smith is not an actress, yet she lives in a theater.
She's not an orphan, but she has no parents.
She knows every part, but she has no lines of her own.
Until now.

Vania at Reverie Book Reviews and I were thinking that we wanted to help Lisa celebrate this momentous week by sending her some congratulatory vlogs, cards, pictures, etc.  How can we do that?  Well, you make a vlog congratulating Lisa on her release, post it on your blog, and then come back here and leave the link to your post in the comments.  If you are not a vlogger, then make a card, a poster, write a note, etc., post a picture of it on your blog, and then come back here and leave the link in the comments.   At the end of the week, we are going to ask Lisa to choose the top 2 entries for a prize pack.  What, prizes?  Yes, prizes, and here they are:

First prize will receive:
  • An 8X10 print of your choice from the Eyes Like Stars photo shoot that Vania did
  • Waters and Wild
  • Coffeehouse Angel (ARC)
  • Dairy Queen

  • The Giver
Second prize will receive:

Extra Entry for Extra Prize:

I have created a Google Map for Lisa because Eyes Like Stars has been sent out early and we want to track where they are being spotted.  So, if you go out and find Eyes Like Stars in your mailbox or at the bookstore, snap a picture of it and send it to me, along with the city, state and zip code of where you are.  I will then post it on the map and one participant will be chosen at random to win an 8X10 print from Vania's photo shoot along with some Eyes Like Stars swag.

That's all there is to it!  The contest will run from today until Saturday, July 11th at midnight.  The winners will be chosen and their entries posted on our blogs.

Oh, and Lisa has no idea we are doing this, so until she sees this post, or your entry...shhhh!

Because of A Book

Today is the first installment of a brand new, weekly feature called Because of A Book.  If you want to know the story behind this feature, read yesterday's post.  Our first guest is YA author, Lisa Mantchev.  Before I let her take over, I'd like to tell you a little about her.

Lisa Mantchev grew up in the small Northern California town of Ukiah and can pinpoint her first forays into fiction to the short stories she thumped out on an ancient typewriter. She now makes her home on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state with her husband Angel, her daughter Amélie and four hairy miscreant dogs. When not scribbling, she can be found on the beach, up a tree, making jam or repairing things with her trusty glue gun. Eyes Like Stars is her first novel. Find out more at http://theatre-illuminata.com/.

And now, here's Lisa!

Three girls, one stage school.

The year I was in fourth grade, I had a no-nonsense teacher who ended up with the nickname Mrs. Grizzlybear. This was largely the result of her spelling tests, in which we were expected to use each word properly in a sentence. She would have had better luck with me if she'd included some of my new favorite vocabulary words:

Pocket money, attaché case, dress circle, license, m'audition.

Because, after receiving Ballet Shoes as a birthday gift from my aunt, I lived, ate, and breathed the story of the Fossil sisters. One was an actress, the second a gearhead and a mechanic, the third a ballet dancer, but they all attended the Children's Academy of Dancing and Stage Training and studied under the tutelage of the renowned Madame Fidolia. Oh, I wanted to go, too. Better yet, I wanted to be Pauline: golden-haired, beautiful, stage actress, film star.

My love of Ballet Shoes knocked over the first of many literary dominoes for me.

Pauline and her sister Petrova perform in a charity performance of Maeterlinck's The Blue Bird, and parts of the script were included in the text. When I found a tattered hardbound copy of The Blue Bird in a used bookstore, I devoured it, then turned the scene with the Unborn Children into a skit for the May Day festival: my directorial debut.

Pauline's very first audition was for Alice in Alice in Wonderland.  Enter, Stage Left, the "Drink Me" bottle in the Théâtre Illuminata Properties Department.

And, perhaps most importantly, Pauline and Petrova go on to perform in A Midsummer Night's Dream. So I asked for a Complete Works of Shakespeare. It must have been a curious sight: a nine-year-old, sitting on front porch with a giant gilt-edged, leather-bound book on her knees. I still have that book, and surely it is template for my own Complete Works of the Stage.

When the fairies appeared in Eyes Like Stars, I knew immediately which ones I wanted to use: Peaseblossom, Moth, Cobweb, and Mustardseed. They only have a handful of lines (even then, Petrova struggles to get her "And I!" just right) which made them a blank slate on which I could paint my own brand of sugar-fueled mayhem. Nana would be highly disapproving of my Fearsome Foursome's shenanigans, but she'd be thankful to know I didn't send them onstage in their combies.

When I back up far enough, I see the patterns created by all those fallen dominoes in the pages of my own novel, and it's one that makes me smile. Perhaps someday there will be echoes of Beatrice Shakespeare Smith in someone's work, but I'd be wholly satisfied if the dominoes tipped by Eyes Like Stars include a child asking to see a play for their birthday, or reading their first bit of Shakespeare...

Or using a cupcake as a trampoline. *wipes the frosting off my shoes*

Review: Eyes Like Stars

Title:  Eyes Like Stars
Author:  Lisa Mantchev
Review Copy Provided by:  Feiwel and Friends

About the Book:  All her world’s a stage.  Bertie Shakespeare Smith is not an actress, yet she lives in a theater.  She’s not an orphan, but she has no parents.  She knows every part, but she has no lines of her own.  That is, until now.

Enter Stage Right

NATE. Dashing pirate. Will do anything to protect Bertie.

COBWEB, MOTH, MUSTARD SEED, and PEASEBLOSSOM. Four tiny and incredibly annoying fairies. BERTIE’S sidekicks.

ARIEL. Seductive air spirit and Bertie’s weakness. The symbol of impending doom.

BERTIE. Our heroine.

Welcome to the Théâtre Illuminata, where the actors of every play ever written can be found behind the curtain. They were born to play their parts, and are bound to the Théâtre by The Book—an ancient and magical tome of scripts. Bertie is not one of them, but they are her family—and she is about to lose them all and the only home she has ever known.

My Review: First of all, don't you just love the cover?  It just looks magical, and well it should, because in this book, magic seems to happen.  You may have some questions like, is it a play? No, but at times it reads like one.  Is it based on Shakespeare? No, but some of the characters are taken from Shakespearean plays and parts of the plays are used in the book.  Do I need to be familiar with Shakespeare before I read this? No. You can understand the book just fine without knowing any Shakespeare.  Did I like this book? YES, I did!

This was a fun read for me.  I really enjoyed the lightheartedness of it, and I attribute that to the fairies.  They have to be my absolute favorite characters in the whole book, especially Peaseblossom.  She was always the level headed one, the voice of reason, and the one who kept the "boys" in line.  Maybe I can relate to her a little, okay a lot!  The boys were mischievious and kept me laughing throughout.  You can always count on them to be the comic relief during the tense times in the story.

Bertie, the main character, is strong-willed, to say the least.  She knows what she wants and she sets out to get it from the very beginning.  When she's asked to leave the Theatre, she asks for a chance to prove herself in order to stay.  Not many believed she would pull it off, but Bertie was sure, until something happens to disrupt her plans.  It's part magic and part perseverence that allow Bertie to overcome and push through the tragedy.  Does she stay at the theatre?  You'll have to read it to see.

Lisa Mantchev has a fantastic read on her hands!  She has craftted a work that is unique, magical, funny and enjoyable.  Drama buffs will flock to it because it's about what they love, the theater.  Others will enjoy it for the fun that it exudes.  Read it and you will see for yourself.

5/5 stars to Lisa Mantchev and Eyes Like Stars - Bravo! Bravo!

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

This week's teaser is from Eyes Like Stars, by Lisa Mantchev.  This YA book will be released in July so look for it in your stores then.

Then she was upright once more, with both armas above her head.  Fountain spray drifted over them, dampening Bertie's skirts and spangling her hair with blue-diamond brilliants. ( p. 181)
