Wednesday Wanderings - 7/8/09

I wander around the blogosphere and bring you what I find.

It's been awhile since I've brought you an edition of Wednesday Wanderings.  I have been busy finishing summer school, preparing for my new job as AP, and doing alot of blog tours (they all seemed to come at once).  Anyway, this week, I want to remind you about some contests I am doing here, that may have been overlooked during the 4th of July festivities.

First, a great group of bloggers and I are trying to get the word out about Stephanie Kuehnert's, soon to be released, YA novel, Ballads of Suburbia.  Please pre-order this book and get entered to win some great prizes in the Big Ballads Blitz!  Stephanie's also having a Cyber Release Party, and you are invited!

Next, yesterday was FINALLY the release of Lisa Mantchev's debut YA novel, Eyes Like Stars.  I reviewed it here.  Vania (Reverie Book Reviews) and I are holding an Eyes Like Stars Release EXTRAVAGANZA!!!  Create a congratulatory vlog, card, note, post for Lisa and put it on your blog, then leave your link in the comments and you are entered to win some GREAT prizes!!  Also, go find Eyes Like Stars in a store near you, snap a pic and send it to me along with the city and state where you found it.  You will be entered to win a print from an Eyes Like Stars photo shoot.  You can see the prints at Vania's Life Captures.

Here are some other contests you might want to check out:

Just Blinded Book Reviews is giving away an ARC of Sarah Dessen's Along for the Ride.  To enter, tell her what you do when you can't sleep.  Ends 7/17

On an unrelated note, unrelated because it's not a contest.  Michelle Zink's YA novel, Prophecy of the Sisters, is due to be released 8/1, but Amazon has it IN STOCK! Go forth and order your copy NOW!!!

Finally this week, I was able to review a neat new website for kids.  Since I work with children, I fell in love with this immediately and knew I had to share it with you.  The name of the website is Shidonni.  Here is a blurb that I received from Noa, a fellow blogger and marketing/social media consultant who is promoting the site:

Shidonni is a virtual world for children, ages 5 and up, based on the idea of drawing animals and caring for them, but with a 21st century twist.
Visitors to the site receive a blank canvas where they can draw an animal and create a background for that animal to play. After drawing their virtual pets, children play with them as they magically 'come alive'. Children then care for, feed and play games that incorporate their animals as main characters.

In order to play, you have to download Microsoft's free plug-in, Silverlight.  To play around with the site, you can click on "try me" or you can register for free with a username and password.  You start by creating an animal, then a background for the animal.  Once the animal is created, it comes to life.  It was cute to see the little pig I drew walking across the screen! You can even get a surprise, a bedroom, or create food for your animal.  All of the work is done on a very user friendly "paint" like program.  It will be easy for children to use once you show them how as all of the buttons are self-explanatory.  You draw with a pencil, paint with a paint bucket, erase with an eraser, etc.  There is also an explanation page for parents.  I had fun playing around and know that kids will too.  Animals can be saved as long as you are a member.  Registration is free or you can become a Shidonni Pro which allows you to dress your animals and get other extras for them and their world.  They offer a 1 month, 3 month or 6 month offer.

Noa has graciously offered one of my readers a 3 month Shidonni Pro Account!  All you have to do is visit Shidonni, take a look around, let your kids play with it, etc.  Come back here and leave a comment as to what you liked or didn't like about the site.  I will run the contest through Sunday, March 29 at midnight.  One comment will be chosen at random to win and will be emailed and posted on this blog on Monday the 30th.  Please leave your email address, in code, so that I can contact you.

There are some great giveaways going on over at 5 Minutes for Giveaways.  This is a sister site to 5 Minutes for Mom, another great blog.  Two that I thought were great are the Roku Player with a 6 month Netflix subscription and The Amazing Box-o-Box.

My friend Kathy, who blogs at Bermudaonion's Weblog has listened to her favorite audiobook so far and she wants to share it with some of you.  She has 3 copies of Little Pink House to give away.  Stop by and get yourself entered.

Gwynne at Connecting2Give helps fulfill needs for people, but she also posts about gives on her blog.  This give is her personal one.  She recently bought a Targus Grypton Tripod for her new video camera, and she bought an extra one to give away to someone else.  She wants to know why you want it, what you would do with it, etc.  Well, this is something I would love to have!  For my birthday last year, I got a great new Fuji camera.  It does so many things that I have yet to figure out, but one thing is that it has a timer on it, so I could set it to take pictures.  My husband and I need a new picture together, but there is not usually anyone around to take it.  Having a tripod for my camera would help with this.  I could really put it to good use!

Now, for my request.  I entered a photo in a contest over at 5 Minutes for Moms, Horsing Around Photo Contest.  Well, the finalists are out today and I am 1 of 20.  WOW!  So, there will be 3 winners chosen to receive a $100 gift certificate to A Rocking Horse to Love.  First prize goes to the entry with the most votes, and I need your votes.  My picture is #9.  Please vote by clicking on the link above - thank you!!  I will be posting a new giveaway tomorrow, and voting gets you an extra entry.

That's all for this week...until next week, enjoy the blogs, read alot and happy entering!

Posts of Interest

Grow Wings needs your help.  In a recent post, Young Readers Online, she wrote about connecting kids with the kidlitosphere.  Do you have any thoughts on the topic that you could share with her?

The Book Chook is a great blog full of all things children's lit.  Susan had a great post this past week: No Time to Read to Kids.  This is a topic near and dear to this early childhood teacher's heart; what do you think?

What's New?
On Sunday, I posted about a new charity program that I am involved in called The Ark Adventure.  If you missed the post, you can read it here.   I am honored to be a part of this group and hope that you will help out when and if you can.

Many book bloggers have other hobbies.  I know, who has time for something else when you have so many books to read?  It is possible!  Many book bloggers enjoy knitting when they're not reading.  I got involved in a Twitter discussion about it, and then got followed this week by KnittingHelp, which led to me to a new blog, KnittingHelp, where you can learn to knit via free videos.  Maybe I'll take up a new hobby.

I've saved the best for last.  This past week, MotherReader introduced us to Kidlitosphere Central.  Pam, along with Elizabeth Burns, Kelly Harold, Jen Robinson, and Anne Levy, have collaborated on this great new website.  Here are some excerpts from the website:

What started as individuals blogging independently about children’s and young adult books became a collective of like-minded people. While maintaining our own sites and unique perspectives, shared activities made us a thriving community. Now — with weekly celebrations of poetry and nonfiction, an online literary journal, a shared database of book reviews, discussion groups, contests, social networks, an annual conference, and our own book awards — we’ve become a society.

KidLitosphere Central strives to provide an avenue to good books and useful literary resources; to support authors and publishers by connecting them with readers and book reviewers; and to continue the growth of the society of bloggers in children’s and young adult literature.

Welcome to KidLitosphere Central: The Society of Bloggers in Children’s and Young Adult Literature at www.kidlitosphere.org.

I hope you've enjoyed this week's edition of Wednesday Wanderings.  What did you "wander" upon this week?
